The agreement between you and Charta Learning when you use this service. Plain words where plain words will do.
What this is
Charta Learning is self-study preparation for the CFA® Program exams, sold level by level: a bank of practice questions, written and narrated explanations, mock exams, an adaptive study plan built from your own answers and, on a paid plan, a tutor that answers questions about the outcome you are studying. It is a study aid. It is not a course accredited by anybody, and it is not a substitute for the official curriculum.
The agreement is between you and Sets and Social Limited, a company registered in England and Wales, number 16932988, at 14 Alison Drive, Camberley, Surrey, GU15 2DY, which operates Charta Learning. “We” and “us” below mean that company.
Your account
One account per person, and it is yours alone — do not share the credentials. Keep the password to yourself and tell us promptly if you think someone else has it. You must be old enough to enter a contract where you live.
Free allowance and paid plans
Without paying, and with no card needed, you can sit the diagnostic, get a study plan, practise one learning outcome in every topic — ten in all — with the explanation of every answer, read the written notes for every outcome, and track your progress. Everything else, including practice beyond those ten outcomes, the walkthroughs and narration, the formula cards, mock exams, spaced review and the tutor, is part of the full course, which you can pay for in one of two ways: £39 a month, or £499 once for lifetime access. Both cover every level. All prices include VAT where it applies. Prices can change, but not for a period you have already paid for, and never for lifetime access you have already bought.
Free trial. From a verified account you can start a free trial of the full course once for each exam, and once for each email address: seven days of everything, with no card asked for and nothing charged. It includes a few tutor questions and marked essays rather than the full monthly allowance. When the seven days end you go back to the free allowance and everything you have answered stays in your account. A trial is not a subscription and does not renew. We may refuse or end a trial that is being used to get around paying, for example by opening several accounts.
Which levels a plan covers. Both plans cover Levels I, II and III of the CFA® Program exams. A monthly subscription covers whichever level you are studying with us, and moving to the next level when you pass costs nothing extra. Lifetime access covers all three levels. Buying lifetime access ends a monthly subscription at the end of the month already paid for.
Lifetime access means the full course, for your own personal use, for as long as we run Charta Learning, with no further payment. It belongs to your account and cannot be transferred to anyone else. This is what “access to the service and updates for every level, until you pass” means on the plans page: lifetime access is not tied to an exam sitting, so if you resit you keep it, with no further payment, however many sittings it takes, and you keep it after you pass.
Who you are buying from
On the website, subscriptions and lifetime access are sold through Stripe, which acts as merchant of record. Stripe is therefore the seller for your purchase, issues the invoice, and handles the sales tax or VAT due where you are. Your payment details are given to Stripe and never to us.
Buying in the iPhone app
In the iPhone app, the same two plans are sold through Apple’s App Store instead, at the price the App Store shows you there. Apple is then the seller: the payment is charged to your Apple ID, and Apple issues the receipt and handles the tax.
A monthly subscription bought in the app renews automatically each month at the same price until you cancel it. You can cancel or change it in your iPhone’s Settings (tap your name, then Subscriptions), and you need to do so at least 24 hours before it renews to avoid the next charge. Access continues to the end of the month you have paid for. Deleting your Charta account does not cancel an App Store subscription; only you can, in Settings.
Refunds for anything bought in the app are handled by Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com, and not by us. If Apple refunds a purchase, the access it bought ends. What you buy in the app belongs to the Charta account you were signed in to when you bought it, works on the website too, and can be brought back on a new iPhone with Restore purchases.
Buying in the Android app
In the Android app from Google Play, the same two plans are sold through Google Play instead, at the price Google Play shows you there. Google is then the seller: the payment is charged to your Google Play account, and Google issues the receipt and handles the tax.
A monthly subscription bought in the app renews automatically each month at the same price until you cancel it. You can cancel it at any time in the Play Store app (tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions), and access continues to the end of the month you have paid for. Deleting your Charta account does not cancel a Google Play subscription; only you can, in Google Play.
Refunds for anything bought in the app are handled by Google, under Google Play’s refund policies, and not by us. If Google refunds a purchase, the access it bought ends. What you buy in the app belongs to the Charta account you were signed in to when you bought it, works on the website too, and can be brought back on another Android phone with Restore purchases.
Cancelling and refunds
This section is about purchases made on the website; for the iPhone app and the Android app, see above. You can cancel at any time from the billing page. Cancelling stops the renewal; access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for, and there is no partial refund of that period.
Lifetime access is a single payment, so there is nothing to cancel. If you are paying monthly when you buy it, your subscription stops renewing at the end of the month you have already paid for, and you are not charged for it again. If a payment on it is overdue at the time, the subscription is ended straight away. If a lifetime purchase is refunded in full, the access it bought ends with it.
If you are a consumer in the UK or EU you normally have 14 days to change your mind about digital content. Because access is immediate, starting to use the paid material counts as asking for it to begin at once and acknowledging that the 14-day right ends when it does. If something has gone wrong with a charge, write to us and we will look at it properly.
Inviting a friend
Every account has an invite link. Someone who opens an account through it gets more free practice from the start than the usual free allowance. When they pay for a plan, the person who invited them is given a free month once that payment has stood for 14 days without being refunded:
- on a subscription that is still renewing, a month’s price is added as credit to their Stripe account and comes off their next bill;
- otherwise, 30 days of full access, starting when any access they already have ends.
Lifetime access has nothing further to give, so an invite earns a lifetime owner nothing. Each friend who pays earns one reward, once. A free month is not a subscription, is not charged for when it ends, and has no cash value. We may change or end the invite scheme, but a reward already earned will still be given.
Study buddies
Study buddies are optional and free. You can have up to three. Nobody can see anything about you until you accept their request, and either of you can end it at any time. A buddy sees your nickname, your streak, whether you have met today’s goal, which of the last seven days you studied on and, only if you choose, your exam date. They do not see your email address, scores or anything you study.
Choose a nickname you are happy for friends to see, and don’t use one that is offensive, impersonates somebody else or contains personal details. A nudge is a short fixed message; you can’t write to a buddy through it. You can decline or block a request, and turn nudges off, in Settings. Use Report on a buddy or a request if a nickname or a person is abusive: it ends the link and blocks them at once, and we will review it, remove the nickname and may close the account it came from.
What is not promised
No result is guaranteed. Nothing here is a promise that you will pass, and no score shown in the app is a prediction of an official result. Forecasts and estimates are the output of a model fitted to your answers; they are useful for deciding what to study next, and they are not a grade.
We work to keep the material accurate and current to the stated curriculum, but errors are possible. Reporting one from inside a question is the quickest way to get it fixed.
The tutor
The tutor's answers are written by an AI model, from our material for the outcome you have open. They are not reviewed the way the rest of the course is, and they can be wrong: treat an answer as a prompt to check the note, not as a replacement for it. The report control on every answer sends it to a reviewer.
It is part of a subscription, with a monthly allowance of questions shown beside the box, and it is closed while a mock exam is running. It is for studying the material here; it gives no investment advice and says nothing about what will be on any particular exam. Using it to extract the question bank, or asking it questions by script, counts as bulk extraction under the section below.
Marking of written answers
Written answers to Level III essay questions are marked by an AI model, every time, against a marking scheme we have written for the question. The marks and feedback are indicative: they are practice marks to study from, not CFA Institute’s marking, and they do not predict the mark an answer would receive on the exam. They can be wrong; the report control on every marked answer sends it to a reviewer. Marking has a monthly allowance, and a smaller one without a subscription. An answer is saved when you submit it, and one that cannot be marked straight away is kept and marked later.
CFA Institute trademarks
CFA Institute does not endorse, promote, or warrant the accuracy or quality of the products or services offered by Charta Learning. CFA Institute, CFA®, and Chartered Financial Analyst® are trademarks owned by CFA Institute. The questions, explanations and study notes are written for this product and are not CFA Institute curriculum material.
The material is ours
The questions, explanations, diagrams, narration and software are our copyright. The outcomes follow CFA Institute's published topic outlines but are described in our own words. The CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, and any wording quoted from them, belong to CFA Institute. A subscription or a lifetime purchase buys you personal use of them while it lasts. Copying, republishing, reselling or feeding the material into another product is not permitted, and neither is automated bulk extraction of the question bank.
Availability
We aim to keep the service running and make no guarantee that it will be uninterrupted. Maintenance, upstream outages and faults happen. If the service is unavailable for a long stretch of a period you have paid for, write to us.
Liability
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Otherwise, and to the extent the law allows, our liability arising from the service is limited to the amount you paid in the twelve months before the claim, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including any exam outcome.
Ending the agreement
You can stop using the service at any time, and you can delete the account yourself from Settings. Deleting removes the account and the work in it for good; if a subscription is still running, cancel it first, on the same page. What survives a deletion, and why, is set out in the privacy notice.
We may suspend or close an account that shares credentials, extracts the question bank in bulk, or otherwise breaks these terms; where it is fair to do so we will refund the unused part of a paid period.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer elsewhere, this does not take away rights you have under the law of your own country.
