Misrepresentation
Under Standard I(C), knowingly making an untrue or misleading statement, or omitting a fact, about investment analysis, recommendations, actions or other professional activities. Plagiarism is a form of it.
Where you will meet it
Misrepresentation appears in 7 learning outcomes on the CFA syllabus. A few of them:
- Use Standard I (Professionalism) to judge a case
“Misrepresentation prohibits untrue statements about investments, qualifications or performance.”
- Explain what the Code and Standards expect of members ethically, covering every standard and its subsections
“Professionalism covers law, independence, misrepresentation, misconduct and competence, and Integrity of Capital Markets covers inside information and manipulation.”
- Apply the CFA Institute Code and Standards to the conduct of people who choose external managers
“Standard I(C) Misrepresentation applies when presenting candidates' results to the committee.”
- Put the Misrepresentation standard, I(C), into practice
“Members must not knowingly make any misrepresentation relating to investment analysis, recommendations, actions or other professional activities.”
