Returns-based style analysis
Inferring a manager's style by regressing the fund's returns on those of style indexes. It needs only the return history, but shows the average exposure over the period and can miss changes within it.
Where you will meet it
Returns-based style analysis appears in 2 learning outcomes on the CFA syllabus. A few of them:
- Explain how equity styles are classified and where the labels fall short
“Returns-based style analysis regresses a manager's returns on the returns of style indexes to infer effective exposures.”
- Explain how style analysis, both holdings-based and returns-based, supports the choice of investment managers
“Returns-based style analysis regresses a manager's returns on style indexes, with weights constrained to be non-negative and to sum to one, to infer an effective style mix.”
Practise it
Practise returns-based style analysis until it is automatic: questions that explain every wrong option.
