Discuss specialist hedge fund strategies: their investment features, how they are put into practice and the role they play in a portfolio

The idea

Specialist strategies need unusual skills or access and aim for returns unrelated to traditional markets. Volatility traders trade volatility itself through options, VIX futures and variance swaps; a long-volatility book acts as a tail hedge that gains in sharp sell-offs but bleeds option premium in calm periods, while short-volatility books collect premium with severe left-tail risk. Reinsurance and life settlement strategies buy insurance risk: a life settlement fund buys policies from their holders, keeps paying premiums and collects the death benefit, so returns depend mainly on how long the insured lives rather than on markets, though discount rates, funding costs and the insurer's credit still matter. Catastrophe reinsurance earns premiums in exchange for disaster exposure. The trap is assuming low correlation means low risk; these carry idiosyncratic and tail risks that are hard to model.
