Contrast the risk-return profiles of different special situations strategies, and of special situations versus other private debt, in a strategic allocation

The idea

Within special situations, senior rescue lending and secured distressed claims give contractual, lower-risk returns. Control distressed positions and litigation finance behave more like equity, with higher targets and wider dispersion. Compared with direct lending, special situations target higher returns, pay less current income, and depend more on capital gains and lumpy, uncertain timing. The opportunity set is countercyclical, with the best vintages tending to follow downturns. In a strategic allocation the sleeve is therefore usually modest and opportunistic, with capital ready for periods of stress. The case should show how it complements steady senior credit. The trap is treating special situations as a yield product: their payoff is event-driven, and they need patience and specialist skill.
