Contrast analysing corporate debt for credit risk with the analysis that securitized debt requires
The idea
Securitised debt is backed by a ring-fenced pool of assets held in a bankruptcy-remote entity, so the analyst studies the collateral and the structure rather than the originator's balance sheet. Granular pools of many small, similar loans, such as car loans or mortgages, are analysed statistically using historical default and loss data; lumpy pools of a few large exposures need loan-by-loan analysis. Static pools do not change; revolving pools add new assets and need eligibility tests. The waterfall, credit enhancement and tranche seniority determine who absorbs losses. The servicer matters because weak collections raise losses, even though the originator's own default would not reach the pool.
