Assess the investment philosophy of a manager and the process by which it reaches investment decisions
The idea
Start with the philosophy: what market inefficiency or risk premium does the manager believe it can exploit, why does it persist, and why can this firm capture it when others cannot? A credible answer is specific, rests on behavioural, structural or informational grounds, and survives competition. Then test the process against it: how the universe is defined, ideas generated, portfolios constructed, risk controlled and positions sold. Philosophy, process, people and portfolio must be consistent; a self-described high-conviction stock picker holding 300 names close to index weights fails that test. Attribution and holdings should show returns coming from the stated edge. Also assess the team's depth, key-person risk, incentives and capacity, since a sound process weakens once assets outgrow the opportunity.
