Explain and propose suitable choices about citizenship, nationality and legal residence for private clients

CFA® Level III · Private Wealth Pathway · Advising the Wealthy · L3.PW.6.a

The idea

Citizenship and nationality give membership of a state and a passport; legal residence grants the right to live somewhere; tax residence, often based on days present or personal ties, determines where income is taxed, and some legal systems also use domicile. Families seek additional residence or citizenship for mobility, security, education, business access or lifestyle, sometimes through investment-based programmes. A recommendation should start from the family's motives and weigh costs, residence requirements, whether dual citizenship is allowed, reporting duties, departure taxes and succession effects, with specialist legal advice. The trap is treating a new passport as a tax solution: changing citizenship alone may not change tax residence, and concealment is evasion, not planning.
