Explain and propose approaches for entrepreneurs and business owners that build their human and financial capital and their economic net worth
The idea
A business owner's human capital, income and much of their financial wealth are tied to the same illiquid, concentrated asset, so risk is high and liquidity low. Approaches include building a diversified portfolio outside the business with low correlation to it and a more conservative stance than the owner's appetite might suggest, separating personal and business assets, key-person and buy-sell arrangements funded by insurance, and succession planning. Liquidity events such as a sale, recapitalisation, listing or employee buyout should be prepared years ahead, covering valuation, tax, estate structure and life after exit. The trap is investing outside wealth in the owner's own industry or waiting until a crisis forces a sale on poor terms.
